We need to do more. Period.

Coping Mechanisms? Why aren’t we teaching them?
So here’s my rant for today - why aren’t we offering coping mental health mechanisms in the classroom and schools? All these school shootings and no one has thought that while we are teaching our children the fundamentals of life - we are NOT teaching them on HOW to DEAL with life. Let’s face it - kids are not getting it all at home. Not knocking parents that are in the trenches and trying their best, but let’s be honest - the kids aren’t listening. We need to proactively have programs in school that teach healthy conflict resolution. That way maybe another student won’t resort to a mass shooting or suicide to fix something in their life.
We need to do more. Period.
This is not intended to offend anyone who has had to deal with tragedy in their life because of suicide or being a victim of violence. I just feel that if we at least try to start a conversation with kids as they are growing that they might choose to resolve a conflict using other methods.
I know teachers and administrators work hard. All the anti-bullying methods and training have been tremendous. But I still believe there is more. And it shouldn't fall on the teachers and admin. It needs to come from licensed mental health professionals.
It should be handled my someone trained in mental health and used to supplement the teaching that is happening throughout the day. We need to start a whole new area of curriculum. Because let’s face it folks - our society needs it desperately. Whether you see it or not, we are raising a group of young children that will have so many more obstacles in their paths with the way society is. We need to proactively help these young minds to be able to handle all the situations they will face.
Okay - rant over! :)
